How to Get Makeup Stains out of a Mattress

Ending up with makeup stains on your mattress or other bedding is frustrating but it does happen. Maybe the corner of the sheet slipped off while you were sleeping and you forgot to remove your makeup the night before. Or, maybe you were applying your makeup on the bed and something spilled. Either way, you want to remove the stain before it sets in.

Of course, if you have makeup stains on your sheets or your mattress protector, you can simply remove them from the bed and wash them to get the stain out. It’s not as easy to figure out how to get makeup stains out of a mattress because you can’t toss it in the washing machine. I’ve had luck with these tips.

But, before you try them, make sure that you read the care label on your mattress and test these methods in a small, out of the way area. It’s also important to keep the mattress as dry as possible while you’re removing the stains.

How to remove mascara from a mattress

Removing mascara from a mattress can be a challenge because many of them are waterproof. However, if you get to it quickly enough, this method should work relatively well. Using a butter knife, scrape off any loose mascara being careful not to rub the mascara into the mattress any more than it is.

Then, mix a few drops of blue dishwashing liquid with a cup of water. Using a soft cloth, gently dab at the mascara until it lifts away. You don’t want to rub the mascara into the mattress so be careful. Allow it to air dry completely before you put the sheets back on the bed.

Then, using shaving cream, gently blot the stain away with a soft cloth. Once the stain is removed, use a soft cloth dipped in water to remove any excess shaving cream. Allow to air dry.

Lipstick is often oil based which makes cleaning it a little bit more difficult. You will need to cut the oil in order to remove lipstick stains. Begin as above by scraping away any solids with a butter knife. You should use a cotton ball soaked in either isopropyl alcohol or witch hazel. Then, dab lightly at the stain until it is gone. Repeat as needed with a clean cotton ball until the stain is removed.

If you’re wondering how to remove old stains from a mattress, you can try a citrus cleaner or a mild dish liquid mixed with water. For blood or urine, you will want to use hydrogen peroxide. Older stains are much more difficult to remove from a mattress so your success will depend on how old the stain is.
