5 Ways to Show Your Support for Earth Day
While I don’t advocate shopping for the purpose of shopping, if you do need to replace something, purchasing from these companies is a way to help.
Manufacturing clothes can be very damaging to the earth when companies don’t follow sustainable practices. Farmers use pesticides on the plants we turn into the fabric. There are also harmful dyes and chemical waste used in the manufacturing process.
Tropical rainforests contain more plant and animal species than anywhere else in the world, control global weather patterns, and provide more than 20% of our earth’s oxygen, yet they are disappearing at a rate of hundreds of acres each day!
Buy Eco-Friendly Apparel
Purchase from companies that offer apparel that was created from organic fibers, using fair trade practices, or from recycled clothing. A few of my favorite brands are American Apparel, Rain Tees, and Patagonia.
Donate Your Old Clothes
If you’re anything like me, you have several things in your closet that you never wear. Maybe you bought it intending to wear it but you didn’t like the way it looked or felt afterward.
You can donate your old clothes to a consignment store to be resold instead of throwing them away.
Turn off the Water
You can save a lot of water if you remember to turn it off when you’re not using it. This includes while you’re brushing your teeth, lathering up under the shower, washing your face, and doing the dishes.
Earth Friendly Beauty
When replacing your beauty products, look for eco-friendly options. Try to avoid petrochemicals and harmful ingredients like parabens, triclosan, and SLS. A few of my favorite brands are Bite Beauty, Avalon Organics, and Burt’s Bees.
Simplify and Slow Down
Before making another purchase or driving to the mall for some recreational shopping, slow down. Ask yourself if you truly need the item you’re purchasing. Do you have something else that will work instead? How many pairs of jeans do you really need?
