How to Use a Beauty Serum
It’s pretty easy to know what to do with most of them. Cleansers clean. Moisturizers moisturize. Scrubs scrub. But how and why to use a serum is not quite so clear for many.
As I age, I pay more attention to my skin and the changes I see. I really should have paid more attention when I was younger, but the least I can do is try to slow the aging process just a little bit now.
What is a beauty serum?
A beauty serum is a liquid concentrate of active beneficial ingredients that is meant to target something specific in your skin. What does that mean?
Serums are liquids that contain different ingredients that can help your skin. Serums are readily absorbed into the skin and have a high concentration of skin-benefiting ingredients like vitamins and herbal infusions.
Different serums contain different combinations of ingredients to benefit your skin in different ways. Some have anti-aging benefits, others promote a healthy glow, etc.

The type of serum that you choose will really depend on what skin problem you’re trying to address by using it. Once you’ve chosen the right beauty serum, you need to learn now to apply it properly.

How to use a serum
This is the process I follow:
- Cleanse your skin well of any makeup or oils.
- Pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Never rub your skin with the towel as that can cause irritation.
- If you are going to use a toner, apply it now, before you apply the serum. Unless you have oily skin, you may want to skip the toner as that can further dry out your skin.
- Apply a drop or two of serum to your fingertips and apply it to your face and neck using upward motions.
- Allow your skin to dry naturally.
- If you wear a moisturizer, apply it now and then follow with your traditional cosmetics.
When should I apply a beauty serum?
Beauty serums are generally applied both morning and evening but you should follow the directions on the specific beauty serum you’re using.
In the evening, you can follow the same steps. Cleanse your face of any makeup or oils. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
Apply a drop or two of beauty serum and allow to dry naturally. Follow with your favorite night cream.
How often should I use a serum?
Beauty serums are a long term beauty product for the most part. You aren’t going to see overnight results after using them for just a day or two.
In many cases, you will need to wait several months before you see a noticeable difference in the health of your skin. It’s very important that you use the beauty serum as the directions state to see the most improvement.
Just because the process takes longer, doesn’t mean that beauty serums aren’t worth using.
If aging skin is one of your concerns, you may want to look for beauty serums that contain antioxidants which can help reverse the signs of aging including diminish wrinkles.

I love serums but they can be expensive so I like trying small bottles of different ones. I pinned this to check out your suggestions.
They can be, but thankfully a little bit goes a long way.
