When I hear the words Valentine’s Day, the very first things that I think of are flowers, candy and, of course, jewelry. I’m sure that’s probably what many people think of as well.

The Origin of Valentine’s Day
However, did you know that Valentine’s Day isn’t all about the romantic gifts? Valentine’s Day is also known as Saint Valentine’s Day and it has a broader meaning.
Saint Valentine’s Day is also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine and is celebrated worldwide on February 14. A popular story about Saint Valentine is that he was imprisoned for marrying soldiers which was forbidden in the Roman Empire.
The first recorded instance of the connection between Valentine’s Day and romantic gifts comes much later on. The first recorded instance was in in 14th century England when Chaucer wrote of friends in his circle that presented candy, cards and flowers as a sign of romantic love.
Best gifts for Valentine’s Day
Of course today, many people show their romantic love on Valentine’s Day with many of the same types of gifts that Chaucer wrote about: flowers, Valentine’s Day cards, heart shaped gifts, chocolates and of course jewelry.
Today, diamond jewelry is a popular gift for Valentine’s Day whether in a necklace, bracelet, earrings or ring. Many couples get engaged on Valentine’s Day and choose a diamond engagement ring as a symbol of their love for each other.
Supposedly, Saint Valentine wore a purple amethyst ring with an image of cupid engraved on it. It is assumed that amethyst is the February birthstone for this reason and amethyst is often equated with romantic love.

I never knew the origins of Valentine’s Day. That was neat to read. We celebrate it as a general love day at our house. 🙂
