I fell in love with Japanese Kokeshi dolls a few years ago. If you haven’t heard of Kokeshi dolls, let me explain. Kokeshi dolls are Japanese dolls that were originally from northern Japan. They were handmade from wood and had a large head, a painted face, and a red floral designed body. Since the 1960’s, Kokeshi dolls have become more popular. In the recent years, there has been an increased interest in Kokeshi and Kokeshi fashion and beauty products as a result of Sanrio and Manga.
Kokeshi Fashion and Beauty
Historically, Kokeshi dolls watched over the souls of babies and children. Now, they are just a cute Japanese doll that I’ve been noticing more and more often in beauty products. Here are a few that I have found available now. They do seem to be more popular in Europe than in the United States. I have found several cute Kokeshi dolls (porcelain) on Amazon if you’re looking for a cute decoration. Kokeshi dolls are often exchanged with friends as gifts.
- Pupa Kokeshi Doll Eyeshadow and Blush Palette – Sadly appears to be only available in Italy at the moment.
- Vintage Shaheen Kokeshi Doll Border Print Maxi Skirt with Obi – This is from the 1960s and is one of a kind and vintage.
- Kokeshi Nail Lacquers $27.99
- Kokeshi Perfume with Nail Lacquers $39.99
- Kokeshi T-shirt $17.80
- Havaianas Slim Dolls in Kokeshi (I have these.)
- Kokeshi Galaxy S5 Case $46.95
- Kokeshi Novelty Umbrella $10.69
Have you ever seen any Kokeshi fashion and beauty that I don’t have listed above? I have a Kokeshi body powder that was a gift, but I cannot seem to find it anywhere online.
Here is a fun fact for you. Did you know that the design of the Mii on the Nintendo Wii game is based on the Kokeshi?
