Beeswax Lip Balm Recipe
I’ve always purchased Burt’s Bees Lip Balm in the past, but I realized that it’s very easy to make homemade lip balm and save a few dollars at the store.
I enjoy making my beauty recipes because I can choose will essential oil blends I add. And, I can use only natural ingredients in my beauty products.
These lip balms also make wonderful homemade gifts or stocking stuffers.
This easy lip balm recipe uses beeswax pastilles. I like to use lavender because it is relaxing. But, you can add your favorite essential oils if you prefer.

Can you use pure beeswax on your lips?
Yes, you can. However, I find that the lip balms are much softer if you use some of the other ingredients such as coconut oil or shea butter as well.
What do I need to make homemade lip balm?
This recipe makes 4 one ounce tins.
- Lip balm tins (4 1-ounce lip balm tubes or Chapstick tubes)
- Glass measuring cup
- Microwave or double boiler
- Microwave safe bowl or glass measuring cup
- Spatula
If you don’t have lip balm containers or lip balm tins, you can use any small containers with a lid.
Supplies for homemade beeswax lip balm
- ½ cup infused lavender oil
- 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
- 1 tablespoon shea butter
- 8 drops of lavender essential oil
You can also add Vitamin E oil if you like for added softness.
How do you make lip balm with 3 ingredients?
You can leave out the essential oil if you prefer to use fewer ingredients.

Is white or yellow beeswax better for lip balm?
Both white and yellow beeswax are suitable for lip balm. The difference is that white beeswax has been filtered and processed, while yellow beeswax is more natural.
Can I use coconut oil?
Yes, but if you leave this in a hot car, it will melt very easily. Coconut oil is liquid at 78F.
A better choice would be:
- Cocoa butter
- Shea butter
- Mango butter
If you want your homemade lip balm to be softer, you can also add a bit of:
- Vitamin E oil
- Olive oil
- Jojoba oil
- Sweet almond oil
- Avocado oil
- Sunflower oil
Best essential oils for homemade lip balm
Some of the best essential oils for lip balm recipes are:
- Lavender
- Peppermint oil
- Cinnamon
- Rosehip
- Sweet orange
- Ginger
- Ylang Ylang
Make sure to use only therapeutic-grade essential oils, as some essential oils can be irritating when applied directly to the skin. You need a very small amount of essential oils, no more than 8 drops per recipe.

Vegan homemade lip balm recipe
To make this a vegan lip balm, you can use candelilla wax instead of beeswax.
Beeswax lip balm recipe directions
- Pour the beeswax pellets into the lavender-infused oil. Microwave for 30 seconds and then stir for 30 seconds. Repeat until all the pellets have melted.
- Once the pellets have melted, add the shea butter and repeat the process until it is all melted too.
- Add 8 drops of lavender essential oil.
- Pour the mixture into a tin or glass container.
- Let it sit without the lid on for 4-5 hours or until it fully hardens. Once it is hard, then you can put the lid on.
- Keep it in a dark place without much humidity, and it can last up to a year.
Using a double boiler
If you do not have a microwave, you can make beeswax lip balm in a double boiler. You will need to completely melt the beeswax and shea butter in the double boiler. Use a medium low heat.
Then, add the rest of the ingredients and pour from the double boilder into lip balm tubes. It’s easiest if your double boiler has a pour spout.
Make sure they are completely melted or your homemade lip balm will have a grainy texture.
Shelf life
Your homemade lip balm will last for at least a year if stored in a cool, dark place. If you make larger batches, it can last up to 2 years. To extend the shelf life, keep away from sunlight and extreme temperatures.
You can also add a preservative if you like. Choose a natural preservative, such as Leucidal Liquid SF or Geogard ECT. Make sure to follow the directions on the packaging for proper use.
Once you open your lip balm, it’s best to finish it within 6 months. Any unused portion should be stored away from sunlight and extreme temperatures.
You can now enjoy your homemade lip balm! It’s perfect for everyday use or for gifts. Just make sure to label it with the ingredients used and the date of production so you know when to replace it.
