Since applying Ultra PixieDust nail polish is a bit different than my normal procedure, I thought I’d write a post about how to apply Zoya Ultra PixieDust.

Now that the craziness of the holidays has past, I have time to start changing my nail polish more often.  I love wearing many different types of polish: glossy finish, matte, glitter, nude, neon, etc.

Recently, Zoya came out with a matte textured line of nail polish called Ultra PixieDust.

As I mentioned, Zoya Ultra PixieDust is a matte textured polish. Matte means that although there is some bling from the texture, it’s not a super glossy finish.

Textured means that it is not a smooth finish. If you rub your finger over the top of a polished nail, you will feel the texture of the glitter.

These polishes have both fine micro glitter and mega hex particles.

Should I wear a base coat with Pixie Dust nail polish?

While I normally wear all of my polishes with a base coat, Zoya recommends that you NOT wear a base coat with the Zoya Ultra PixieDust polishes.

The formula for the PixieDust polishes is created so that the particles in the polish adhere directly to your nail bed. By not using a base coat, the drying time will be shorter and the nails will have a more matte look.

For best results, they recommend you not use the base coat.

If you want a truly textured look, be certain to shake the bottle between each coat as the particles will settle.  Apply the polish in thin coats and then layer on the next after it is completely dry.

I found that I loved the way it looked with three thin coats of polish.

Another difference in how you apply this polish is that you should not use a top coat. I normally use a top coat to make my polish last longer but this is a matte polish.

It’s not intended to have a glossy shine. If you put a top coat over this polish, you will loose both the matte finish AND the texture.

Colors in this collection

So here are the three colors in the Zoya Ultra PixieDust collection:

  • Noir – Vampy plum textured PixieDust
  • Oswin – True red textured PixieDust
  • Arianna – Blue-toned red wine textured PixieDust

My thoughts: I didn’t notice a lot of difference between Arianna and Oswin when they were on. They were both very similar dark red.

Noir definitely had a few purple tones to it. Also, because the polish had larger mega hex particles,

I didn’t really get a matte finish with the Zoya Ultra PixieDust like I did with the original PixieDust. They’re still super cute polishes but not as matte as previous.
