Fall Nails at Home: Should You Choose Polish or Press-Ons?

Fall is one of my favorite times of year to change up my nail color. There’s something about a fresh manicure that can make you feel a little more put together, even when you’re simply wearing jeans and a sweater.

But when you’re doing your nails at home, there are more options than just pulling out a bottle of polish. Press-on nails have become an easy alternative, especially when you want a finished manicure without spending as much time painting your nails.

Olive & June recently sent me a selection of their nail products, including polish, press-ons, a Salon Speed Soak-Off System and nail polish remover. Since I was already looking at fall nail colors, I thought it would be a good opportunity to compare two of the easiest at-home options: traditional polish and press-on nails.

Traditional Nail Polish

There’s still something satisfying about choosing a polish color and giving yourself a manicure at home.

Traditional polish makes sense if you enjoy the process and like changing your nail color regularly. You can have as many colors as you want and switch your manicure whenever you’re in the mood for something different.

Why Choose Polish?

The biggest advantage of traditional polish is variety.

If you’re someone who gets bored wearing the same color for very long, polish gives you plenty of opportunities to change things up. You can coordinate your nails with your clothing, choose a seasonal shade or simply pick whatever color you’re feeling that day.

Polish is also a good choice if you enjoy doing your own nails. For some people, sitting down with a favorite color and giving themselves a manicure is a relaxing little beauty ritual.

And you don’t have to choose a traditional dark fall color just because the calendar says autumn.

Soft pinks, neutrals, mauves and other lighter shades can look beautiful in the fall, particularly if you prefer a more understated manicure.

Press-On Nails

Press-ons are the other option I think is worth considering if you want your nails to look finished without spending as much time painting them.

Olive & June sent me three press-on styles:

• Pink Goldfish
• Milky Syrup Gradient

One of the things that makes press-ons appealing is the variety of shapes, lengths and finishes available.

Instead of trying to create a particular look with polish yourself, you can choose a finished style that already has the shape and appearance you’re after.

Why Choose Press-Ons?

Press-ons can be especially appealing when you want your nails done quickly.

They’re also worth considering if you don’t feel particularly confident painting your own nails. Getting polish neatly onto every nail can take some practice, while press-ons give you a ready-made manicure look.

They’re another option for special occasions, too. If you have a dinner, party or event coming up and want your nails to look polished, press-ons can be a convenient alternative to making a salon appointment.

Polish vs. Press-Ons: Which Should You Choose?

So which is better?

Honestly, I don’t think there’s one right answer. It really depends on what you want from your manicure.

Choose traditional polish if you:

• Enjoy doing your own nails
• Like changing your color frequently
• Want lots of colors to choose from
• Prefer to keep your nails looking natural
• Enjoy experimenting with seasonal shades

Choose press-ons if you:

• Want a finished manicure quickly
• Don’t enjoy painting your nails
• Like different nail shapes and finishes
• Want an easy option for an event
• Prefer convenience

For me, having both options available makes sense. There are times when I want to choose a polish color and take my time with a manicure. Other times, the convenience of press-ons is much more appealing.

What About Removing Your Manicure?

Olive & June also sent me their Salon Speed Soak-Off System and nail polish remover, which is a nice addition to the collection.

Having nail polish remover on hand is one of those little things you don’t think about until you’re ready to change your manicure and discover that you’re out.

The Salon Speed Soak-Off System is designed for removing soak-off products, making it another product to have available if you’re using a soak-off manicure system.

For me, this part of the package is less about choosing between polish and press-ons and more about having the right products available when it’s time to remove or change your manicure.

Fall Is the Perfect Time to Experiment With Nail Color

Fall nail trends often focus on rich, darker shades, but I don’t think you have to limit yourself to burgundy, chocolate brown and deep plum.

One of the reasons I love seasonal nail colors is that you can interpret them however you want.

If you love classic colors, try a deep red or berry.

If you prefer something softer, look for a creamy neutral, muted pink or mauve.

And if you like your nails to be a little more unexpected, fall is a fun time to experiment with colors that aren’t necessarily associated with the traditional autumn palette.

I was happy to receive such a variety of products from Olive & June because it gives me the opportunity to approach my manicure in different ways.

I haven’t put the polish or press-ons on my nails for this post. Instead, I’m sharing the products themselves because I wanted to focus on the different options available for doing your nails at home.

So, Which Would I Choose?

I think the answer depends on my mood.

If I want to experiment with color or change my manicure frequently, I’d reach for traditional polish.

If I want something quick and don’t want to spend time painting each nail, press-ons make more sense.

And having remover and the appropriate removal products available simply makes changing your manicure easier.

The good news is that you don’t really have to choose just one. Having both polish and press-ons in your beauty drawer means you can choose whichever works best for you that day.
