I am so excited to be asked to offer my readers a giveaway of sustainable clothing from virtue + vice. virtue + vice was born out of the idea of being a truly green business. The owner felt it was not enough to simply make sustainable designs, she felt she needed to educate consumers on what they were buying and the impacts those decisions made.

Sustainable Clothing from virtue + vice

Her mission for virtue + vice was two-fold: The first was to make amazing clothes with every step of the process carefully researched for the lowest environmental footprint and highest social impact. But, that wasn’t enough. Her second goal was to educate consumers on how clothes are made in order to empower eco shoppers to understand what it is they are really buying. Here are a few facts I learned.

  • CO2 emissions are reduced by 2 tons in 1 year by replacing 1 acre of conventional cotton farming with 1 acre of organic farming.
  • 1/3 pound of agricultural chemicals are typically used in the production of a single cotton t-shirt, organic farming uses NONE.
  • For every 1 person that is needed to run a yarn spinning machine, 50 jobs are created by hand spinning. For every 1 person needed to run an automated loom, 10 jobs are created hand weaving.
  • The apparel industry uses 132 tons of coal per year weaving fabric. Khadi uses none.
  • No water is used, wasted, or polluted hand spinning and weaving khadi
