DIY Lip Gloss Recipe

Lip gloss is a lighter alternative to lipstick that works well in hot weather. Lipstick tends to feather and bleed when the temperature rises. And, that is never a good look. But, you’ll love this lip gloss.

There are lots of easy ways to make your own lip gloss or lip balm. Here are 14 easy lip balm recipes I’ve shared in the past. Or, you can try this natural lip gloss tutorial.

Whether you prefer lip balm or a lip gloss, both are simple enough to make from home with a few common ingredients.

If you’re wondering what makes lip gloss shiny, it’s the oils you use. In this case, coconut oil will give your lips a healthy shine.

What oils do you need to make lip gloss?

You can make a DIY lip gloss recipe with almost any oil including olive oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, and coconut oil. Since coconut has so many health benefits and is wonderful for your skin, hair, and lips, this recipe uses coconut oil.

What ingredients are in lip gloss?

While I enjoy store-bought cosmetics just as much as the next woman, they often contain ingredients that aren’t very good for your lips or skin like polybutene and Ethylhexyl Palmitate.

And, some contain ingredients like Vaseline, which are oil-based and not good for the environment.

What is the lip gloss base?

This DIY lip gloss recipe has only three ingredients: coconut oil, sugar, and Koolaid. Yes, I know Koolaid has other ingredients.

If you want to, you can substitute another type of drink mix that is more natural. It will work fine. But, if you’re wondering how to make flavored lip gloss, you will need some sort of flavor.

In this case, the flavoring comes from the Koolaid packet.

What kind of Koolaid should I use?

So, keep in mind that the color of the Koolaid you choose will be the color it tints your lips. So, cherry, strawberry, raspberry, and grape are popular options.

But, there is no reason why you can’t choose blue raspberry or lemonade if you prefer. Just experiment a little bit to see which color you like the most.

You can experiment with mixing different flavors if you want to make a larger batch. Why not try strawberry lemonade for a lighter pink/red color?

What do I need to make Koolaid lip gloss?

To make this DIY lip gloss recipe, you will need coconut oil, sugar, Koolaid, and small pots to keep your lip gloss in. You will also need droppers.

How long will this DIY lip gloss recipe last?

This lip gloss should last for several months. Keep in mind that coconut oil is liquid at 76F. That means that your lip gloss will start to melt if it gets too warm.

Keep it in the refrigerator if you make this in the warmer weather. It will still work fine. But, the coconut oil won’t be solid.

How do I apply this lip gloss?

Keep in mind that Kool-Aid lip gloss will stain your fingers. After all, that’s why we are putting it on our lips, right? So, it’s best to use a lip gloss applicator wand when you apply it.

  1. This is so cute! Making a batch of these in cute tins would make adorable Valentine’s Day gifts. My daughter dyed her hair with Kool-Aid, so why not lip balm. I bet it tastes wonderful. If you get a chance, come share on Crafty Creators Link Party (Thurs-Mon).

  2. We made this just now with orange Kool Aid for a 4-H thing, but there’s a ton of darker orange spots. We added I think 10 drops of water to the sugar/Kool Aid mixture. I’m not sure what we did wrong.

  3. Where did you find those little containers? We’re using baby food jars, but those little containers in the pictures are perfect!
